Latest News: 629 cases of H1N1 contraction has been discovered

Singapore has confirmed 30 new cases of Influenza A (H1N1) today, bringing the total tally to 629 confirmed cases.
In addition to these 30 new cases, 105 other cases were pending investigation yesterday. Of these 135 cases, 71 have been investigated. The latter includes 58 local cases, and 13 imported cases. The remaining 64 cases are still being investigated.
Though the number of infected cases has increased, the severity of the disease remains relatively mild. To date, 246 patients have fully recovered and the rest are in stable condition.
Tips To Prevent H1N1:
Childcare- Ensure childcare group are kept small to reduce the risk of viral exposure. Ensure schools and childcare groups have adequate and easily accessible hand cleansers and soaps for washing and cleaning of hands
- Advise older children and teenagers not to congregate at public places that may expose them to the disease.
- Arrange with Family Doctors or Specialists for adequate supply of medications for the time being if parents have history of chronic diseases
- Teach the children on maintenance of proper hygiene.
- Regular
and proper hand washing. Proper hand washing requires the use of soap
and water. Rinse hands under running water and dry them thoroughly.
(SSWT) - Teach children not to touch their eyes, nose or mouth without proper hand washing.
- Teach the children proper coughing etiquette e.g. coughing into a tissue paper and dispose the tissue paper appropriately.
- Teach the children to wash their hands before meals, after using the toilet, after sneezing or coughing.

- Regular
and proper hand washing. Proper hand washing requires the use of soap
and water. Rinse hands under running water and dry them thoroughly.
- Toys should be kept clean. To prevent transmission of any
pathogens, it has been recommended that toys that are mouthed should
routinely be cleaned and disinfected. Other toys should be cleaned and
disinfected if they become contaminated by body fluids e.g. saliva or
nasal discharge. Disinfection can be carried out as follows for toys
with non-permeable materials
- Rinse under warm running water to remove gross soiling
- Wash in warm water with detergent
- Rinse under hot water (70 degrees Celsius)
- Air dry
- Toys such as soft toys should be washed regularly and dried.
- Regular mopping and cleaning of the household. Mops and equipment used should be soaked in the disinfectant solution after use and rinsed thoroughly with water. The solution should then be promptly disposed off down a drain pipe. An appropriate disinfectant is the use of diluted household bleach.
Family Members with Chronic Diseases
Discuss with your healthcare provider regarding:
- Care plan should there be a pandemic e.g. how to obtain medication, what can one do for self monitoring of condition such as blood glucose monitoring for diabetic patients etc.
- The feasibility to obtain longer supply of medication especially if control of chronic disease is stable.
- The possibility of consults via phone or email for stable chronic diseases to minimise coming to the clinic.
General
- Stockpiling of essential items such as food, baby milk powder and medicine for 2 weeks or more.
- Minimise outings to public places that are crowded and enclosed such as cinemas, spas, shopping malls etc
- Do not throw leftover food on the floor or in the open.
- Do not leave food in common areas for stray animals.
- Do not spit on the floor and common areas.
- Throw used masks, tissue or litter into rubbish bins.
- Use a serving spoon when sharing food from a common dish.
- Do not share personal items such as toothbrushes and towels.
- Institute self home quarantine if you should fall sick. You should also minimise contact with other family members e.g. sleeping separately and having meals separately.
Surfaces
- Surfaces such as tables, counters, door knobs, stair rails and floors should be cleaned regularly, preferably 3 times a day (at least once a day) and after any suspected contamination e.g. staff/ visitors coughing at the counter. Disinfectant can be applied by using a damp cloth. After which, rinse the cloth with water and wipe the surface again. Finally, wipe the surface dry. A steady sweeping motion should be used when cleaning to avoid splashes. All surfaces must be dried after they have been cleaned and rinsed, as damp surfaces attract contaminants.
- Avoid using spray pack as the spraying may promote aerosols.
- 1% sodium hypochlorite solution (e.g. diluted bleach) can be used for such cleaning purposes. It should be left for at least 10 minutes but not longer than 30 minutes. Be aware that sodium hypochlorite is corrosive and may damage some surfaces such as removing the colours (note that household bleaches are generally 3-6% sodium hypochlorite).
Floors
- Carpets or rugs/mats should be vacuumed using a cleaner that does not throw dust into the air. They can be steam-cleaned if soiled by bodily fluids such as vomitus or sputum.
- Do not hang up mats to swat as it will create aerosols
- Hard floor surfaces should be mopped with damp mop that had been soaked in disinfectants such as 1% sodium hypochlorite solution, rinsed and dried. A steady sweeping motion should be used when mopping to avoid splashes. Bucket for mopping should have a wringer attached for ease of wringing and to avoid unnecessary splashes and hand wrung.
Furnishings and beddings
- Furnishings such as curtains, drapes, screens, lampshades and furniture items should be washed or steam cleaned regularly.
- Pillows can be washed in hot water (70 degree Celsius) with detergents, rinsed and dried in the sun.
- Blankets can be washed in warm water and dried in the sun or in dryers.
- Quilts can be dry-cleaned or if appropriate washed in hot water (70 degree Celsius) with detergents, rinsed and dried in the sun.
- Mattresses can be sunned or steam cleaned on a regular basis.
Air-conditioning Units
Air-cons should be regularly serviced and the air filters changed according to manufacturers’ recommendations
Bathrooms and Toilets
Bathrooms and toilets should be washed at least twice a week with detergents/ disinfectants. They should be flushed with water and allow the floor to air-dry.
